It’s Monday, a day I typically spend reflecting on life, ministry, Grace Church and my own relationship with God. And so today I thought I’d write a little bit about the “making of a movement.”
There is so much to thank God for at Grace Church right now. Significant growth, some numerical, lots spiritual. I’m seeing more people connect, grow and take seriously the call to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our world. We’re hearing from first time people that there is an energy, an intangible sense here at Grace. Could it be that we are seeing the beginnings of a really special movement of God?
Here’s what I’m learning about movements – they aren’t really about a big deal, at least not at first. The way a movement really gets going is lots of little choices all moving in the same direction. For us it’s each person who signs up for a Catalyst, shows up at a Starting Point, comes a few weeks in a row to a worship service, attends an Extend Grace Day, begins giving financially. Now those are the signs, we as leaders, tend to see first — but there are lots of signs we don’t see but they are almost if not more important than those other signs. Each person who chooses to spend time in God’s Word instead of watching another TV show or logging onto Facebook, each person who chooses to talk intentionally to a person who doesn’t know Jesus, each family that chooses to simplify life to provide more margin in their time and finances to devote to God’s mission.
We’ve chosen the purpose statement here at Grace: “Each person taking one step closer to loving Jesus and loving others.” And it really is about one step and it really is about one person. It’s about a lot of little.
We tend to underestimate the power of one step. But I have to say, in my life, it’s the collection of “one step(s)” that have helped me grow. And as the lead pastor at Grace, I can tell you it’s about a collection of “one person(s)” each taking one step(s) that are the reason for the beginnings of the movement we’re seeing as a church! Don’t underestimate what your next step could do not only for yourself but for the entire church! And don’t underestimate that power of what it means for YOU to take that next step. Don’t buy the lie that “somebody else will do it” or “my little step doesn’t really make a difference”! I’m telling you, God is at work through lots of little steps from ordinary people. Let’s ALL keep stepping.
